JOB TITLE:  HVAC Technician Assistant


GRADE:   14 / $26.335
STATUS:  Hourly
POSITION REPORTS TO:  Chief Engineer and Engineering Manager


JOB SUMMARY:   Under the direction of a HVAC Technician and Chief Engineer, assists with the maintenance and repair of all HVAC related mechanical and electrical systems and equipment.  This position will provide on the job training in conjunction with necessary steps to achieve the Journey level HVAC Technician License (L&I-06A). 


MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The statements describe the general nature and level of work only.  They are not an exhaustive list of all required responsibilities, duties, and skills.  Other duties may be added, or this description amended at any time.

  1. Practice, support and promote the Mission, Vision and Values of Muckleshoot Casino.
  2. Assist in repairs to HVAC related systems and equipment as assigned, including air conditioning units, exhaust fans, boilers and chillers.
  3. Completes daily work orders and scheduled preventative maintenance of HVAC equipment.
  4. Changes filters and cleans fan coils as needed.
  5. Adds refrigerants and oil, and tests for defective parts as needed.
  6. Maintains records associated with refrigerant usage as required by EPA.
  7. Assists with complex repairs to heating and cooling systems, including insulation and refrigeration equipment as assigned.
  8. Assists in the repair and maintenance of the low-pressure hot water systems, gas wall heaters, ventilation units and air condition units.
  9. Replaces fans, belts, motors, gaskets, filters, and compressors, and lubricates parts.
  10. Adjusts and installs switches, gauges, thermostats, valves, tubing transformers, pressure regulator controllers, and other parts as needed.
  11. Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, electronic and pneumatic HVAC related systems.
  12. May operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
  13. Complies with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures, and maintains a clean work area.
  14. Complies with all applicable Federal, State and Tribal regulations, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and safety precautions.
  15. Accomplishes four thousand (4,000) verifiable hours, on the job training, per Labor and Industries (L&I) guidelines, to be eligible for the licensing exam (L&I-06A)-hours will be tracked by department personnel.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS (required / preferred): 

  • Must possess Universal EPA certification and a minimum Electrical Trainee card from L&I.
  • Must have and maintain a valid WA State driver’s license with a clean driving record.


  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience working in HVAC trade required.


  • Ability to diagnose defects and install, repair and maintain heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units.
  • Ability to operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, including but not limited to air compressors, pneumatic controls, and welding and soldering tools.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, shop drawings, schematics and sketches.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and oral.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Working knowledge of standard practices of the HVAC trade and theory of HVAC systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authorities pertaining to HVAC.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   The physical requirements described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job.

  • Stamina to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Climbing and working at heights.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, squat and able to lift at least seventy-five pounds (75 lbs.).
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, use hands to grasp, and have finger dexterity to handle objects, tools, or controls.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust.


  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Some essential functions of the job will be performed within a smoking environment.
  • Monitored by surveillance cameras.
  • Use of portable radio or cellular telephone to be in constant contact with department.
